James Mitchell Smith

Obituary Elder James Mitchell Smith, age 87, of Tompkinsville, Kentucky, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Saturday, August 29, 2020, at Signature Healthcare of Monroe.  He was born on October 13, 1932, the son of the late Samuel and Ollie May (Guffey) Smith.  He was united in marriage to Mary Chloe Rhoton who preceded him in death on April 25, 2010.  Mitchell was a member of Freedom #2 Baptist Church in Tompkinsville and had pastored several churches in Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee in his 60 years of being called to preach.  He was retired from International Harvester in Indianapolis, Indiana.  After moving back to Monroe County, Mitchell went to work for the Monroe County School System and retired from there also.  Mitchell was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge # 753, an avid gardener, and enjoyed fishing as well.  He is survived by two children, one son; Gary and his wife Annette Smith, of Nineveh, Indiana, one daughter; Karen and her husband Dana Davis, of Tompkinsville, six granddaughters; Rebecca Reed (Terry), of Franklin, Indiana, Andrea (Richard) Sowders, of New Albany, Indiana, Kathryn (Markus) Zurlino, of Noblesville, Indiana, Felicia (Joshua) Jackson of Greenwood, Indiana, Morgan and Olivia Davis, both of Tompkinsville. Twelve great-grandchildren also survive. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by five brothers and seven sisters. Funeral Services for Mr. Smith will be conducted on Tuesday, September 1, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Anderson-Bartley Funeral Home in Tompkinsville, with burial to follow in the Freedom No.2 Cemetery.  Visitation will be Monday, August 31, 2020, after 3:00 p.m. and again on Tuesday morning from 7:00 a.m. until time for services at 2:00. Elder Billy Moran will perform the service. Masonic Rites will be performed on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel. Alternate expressions of sympathy may take the form of Donations to The Monroe County Backpack Program, or The Freedom No.2 Cemetery, and may be made at the Funeral Home. **Due to restrictions from our Governor, Masks are required upon entry of the Funeral Home.** Anderson-Bartley Funeral Home is both honored and privileged to be entrusted with the care of Mr. Smith.
